FSS Partners with the Academy of Natural Sciences
At the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year, a new educational connection was forged between Friends Select School and the school’s Parkway neighbor, the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. Each section of second and third grade at Friends Select attends a weekly, one hour-long lesson at the Academy for one third of the school year. These trimester-long science units are taught by museum staff members, and are designed by the Academy's education department and the lower school science specialist. The lessons at the Academy serve as a unique and valuable extension of the lower school science curriculum.
The Academy is renowned for its research in the scientific fields of paleontology and limnology (freshwater ecology). Each of these fields served as the focus of the Friends Select science units, paleontology for second grade and limnology for third grade. These academic strengths of the research wing of the Academy offer students the opportunity to be instructed by actual scientists. Field trips with the scientists, to a fossil dig with second grade and on a survey of a local stream for third grade, allow students to join with their instructors in real scientific enterprise.
